How Bon Vivant Cakes Sells Out Cake Decorating Classes on Squarespace

Emily Nejad teaches people to make the most fun, colorful, wild and interesting cakes. Seven to ten classes a week, and they sell out.

That's a good kind of problem, but it’s a hard one to run on the wrong tools.

Before Eventually, Bon Vivant sold classes through Shopify. Shopify is a capable storefront, but it’s not built around dates, and a class business is nothing but dates.

There's no native calendar, so class times ended up buried in product descriptions where nobody could sort or filter them.

When a class fills, you need capacity that pools across every ticket type (early bird, standard, whatever you're offering) so you never oversell a seat. Shopify doesn't do that on its own either.

So Emily did what most people in her position do. She bolted on apps. One for the calendar, another for capacity, a few more to cover the gaps. She was paying a premium for a stack she barely used, and stitching it together by hand.

"I only use a fraction of the tools Shopify provides, and I'm paying this insane premium for it."

It worked, technically. The friction was built into every day.

Eventually is event-based ecommerce for calendar-centric sellers, and Bon Vivant is exactly that. Working with the Week of the Website team, Emily moved to a Squarespace site with Eventually running the classes. The calendar became an actual calendar: sortable, filterable, native to the site. Ticket types pool their capacity the way a class needs them to. Emily runs on the Pro plan, so she has pre-sale, the advanced tools, and a personal onboarding call when she wants a hand.

Then she said something that stayed with us.

"Until this moment, I never considered that there would be a world in which I could have a platform that would be helpful to me. It hadn't even crossed my mind."

Your event, your platform, your customers. A creative business shouldn't have to bend around software built for something else. When the tool fits the work, the classes keep selling out.
